We got a fascinating story to share: born in 1985 as a family, historical winery in Montepulciano, after having sold our vineyards in 2015, we focused on ageing our last vintages – 2013 and 2014 – always pursuing the objective of uncompromising quality. In 2016 Carlotta, daughter of the owner Marco Buracchi, started a new marketing and communication projects around Buracchi latest vintages, the “Ultimo collection”, providing an innovative approach os storytelling, graphic design and content creation, still keeping a deep respect for the land our wines come from.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G.

Production

We have always believed that cultivating and obtaining a good wine implies respecting and listening to the land. That’s why grapes have always been hand-harvested and strictly selected in our vineyards in Cervognano di Montepulciano, probably one of the best production areas in the land where Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is made. This philosophy of hand work in order to carefully monitor, select and protect the integrity of grapes so that they could reach the winery in perfect condition.

Grape varieties

Sangiovese is a dry, medium-bodied red wine that tips towards higher levels of mouth-watering acidity and tighter tannins. It can be really aggressive if planted in a particular “hard” wine area, that’s why in the past the habit was to blend it with other varieties of grape, in order to add softening elements and make a perfect, balanced wine. Not dominated by the expected Sangiovese grape (in Montepulciano area we use a clone of Sangiovese called “Prugnolo gentile”), Ultimo Riserva 2013 brings 95% Prugnolo gentile and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting a particular climate-balanced year in the vineyards. Cabernet Sauvignon balances the distinctive crispy acidity due to the power of tannins in Sangiovese grapes, smoothing his “nervous” personality. Cabernet appears in this blend in order to add depth and spicy elegance. With appropriate ageing in bottle this wine can age well for many years.

Aging

Fermented in cement tanks then aged 2 years in large Slavonian Oak. Passed in big concrete thanks made of vitrified cement where it last 1 year. Cement does not impart additional flavors. The result is a more fruity wine, keeping a light aroma of wood, vanilla and sweet spices. This is followed by a six-months period of refinement in bottle.

Tasting notes

Deep, ruby red in the glass with classic Sangiovese aromas and flavors of wild berries, dried herbs, sweet tobacco and earth. On the palate, the wine is round and ripe, with flavours of cherries, a light touch of vanilla and sweet spices. Vanilla flavour represents a slight oak component underneath that adds but does not detract to fruit. Medium bodied and in good balance, this wine represents exactly what Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is about.

A few technical data

Alcohol by volume (ml/100ml) = 13,38%

Ultimo Buracchi Riserva 2014

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G.

Production

We have always believed that the key to producing quality wine is work in the vineyard; what happens in the winery after the harvest is secondary. It’s the grapes that count.

The impressive versatility – and the power, the tannic structure of Sangiovese – have to be considered also its Achilles’ heel. 2014 have been a challenging year in vineyards so we decided to face this wet, warm climate by adding a little bit more Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) to our traditional Sangiovese grape base (here it appears in the percentage of 80%). The idea was to add flavors and structure to Sangiovese’s thinner appearance in this uneven year. Cabernet Sauvignon is a late ripening grape, contributing structure, depth and long-term aging potential to wine but at the same time it provides elegance and a bit of balance to the fresh, intense and sometimes acid Sangiovese. Ultimo Riserva 2014, made from 80% Sangiovese (called “Prugnolo gentile” in Montepulciano wine area) and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon tend to enjoy deep color, remarkable intensity, a full body, plenty of structure and enduring elegance along with darker fruit components.

Tasting notes

In 2014 vintage wine aromas are open and fresh. Red fruits, new leather, spices and loads of cherry are interwoven wonderfully. On the palate the wine drips sex appeal. Pure, fresh, sensual ripe red berries cascade onto the palate, silky and delicious. The wonderful fruit is supported by gently framed acids and accented with sweet tobacco leaf, freshly turned earth and spices. Everything you could ask for in a young Sangiovese. Medium bodied, it will be in good balance after 1 year more of refinement in bottle.
